Driven by positivity at various fronts like revival of demand from the EU and the US and improved power and gas supply situation at home, textile exports from Pakistan have grown by 5.9 percent year-on-year, during the last financial year that ended on June 30, 2013.

 

Exports grew to US$ 13.06 billion during 2012-13 from US$ 12.34 billion in 2011-12, statistics released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) show.

 

The items that positively contributed to the growth included cotton yarn, whose exports grew by 23.97 percent from US$ 1.81 billion in 2011-12 to US$ 2.24 billion in 2012-13. 

 

Cotton fabric exports also jumped 10.17 percent from US$ 2.44 billion to US$ 2.69 billion, yarn other than cotton yarn by 10.84 percent from US$ 35.63 million to US$ 39.49 million, knitwear by 2.51 percent from US$ 1.98 billion to 2.03 billion, and bedwear by 2.4 percent from US$ 1.74 billion to US$ 1.78 billion.

 

The exports of towel grew by 13.03 percent from US$ 686.38 million to US$ 775.81 million, readymade garments by 12.32 percent from US$ 1.62 billion to US$ 1.81 billion and other textile materials by 25.56 percent from US$ 317.96 million to US$ 399.22 million, during the year.

 

Made-up articles exports also grew marginally by 0.05 percent during July 2012-June 2013 period.

 

However, raw cotton exports for the period plummeted by 66.71 percent from US$ 462.25 million in 2011-12 to US$ 153.87 million during last fiscal. Art, silk and synthetic textile exports also dropped 25.65 percent from US$ 546.34 million to US$ 406.21 million and cotton carded or combed exports by 46.75 percent from US$ 11.64 million to US$ 6.2 million.

 

In June 2013, textile exports grew by 5.2 percent over June 2012. Items contributing to the rise during the month included raw cotton, whose exports grew by 97.95 percent, cotton yarn by 12.7 percent, cotton cloth by 7.48 percent, cotton carded or combed by 100 percent, knitwear by 3.96 percent, bedwear by 4.01 percent, readymade garments by 10.3 percent and other textile materials by 14.96 percent.

 

However, exports of yarn other than cotton yarn plummeted by 2.06 percent, towel by 10 percent, made-up articles by 7.65 percent and art, silk and synthetic textiles by 22.47 percent.
